Work Life Balance Isn’t Always Possible — And That’s Okay, Says Sophia Amoruso

Phew. What a week(s) it’s been. What day is it? What week is it? It feels like they’re all swirling together like a time Icee. But that’s okay. As much as I’d like to give myself shit for working until 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday and slipping out of my fitness routine this week, I’m really proud of all that Team Girlboss and I got done this week.

With work, time isn’t linear. It goes fast and slow, sometimes with hours spent getting nearly nothing done then rushes of brilliance and focus that carry us long into the night. When I can, I grab that Brilliance Puppy by the ears (imagine Falcor from The Neverending Story) and ride it.

But what does that mean for self-care? Is it unhealthy? I ask these questions as I swear my hairline is receding and I look less like the girl with 1,000 skincare products on her counter. I’ve concluded that it’s OK to let ourselves become a work monster sometimes. To chutes and ladders ourselves through intense bouts of productivity, and to let our minds wander, leaving the computer when we’re hitting a wall.

In the end, it’s important to remember that we all work differently. Be self-aware but don’t judge yourself too hardly. Care for yourself when you need, and know that it’s normal to work two full-time jobs when you’re ambitious: the job you have and the job you want tomorrow.
