Your Facebook Messages Are About To Get Filled With Big Ol' Ads
You can scroll, but you can't hide.
It’s not enough that the Zuckerberg machine has forced us to use a separate Messenger app to chat to our friends and fam. Now, Facebook’s gone and done the inevitable and announced on Tuesday that big-ass advertisements will roll out across the app. Is nothing sacred?!
After initial tests in Australia and Thailand back in January, the social media giant will roll out (frankly huge) hyperlinked display ads to all 1.2 billion of its monthly users, slotting them neatly between your list of recent messages. Blergh!
Now WhatsApp is the only Facebook-owned platform not serving personally-targeted ads every few secs. But don’t worry, you guys; Facebook plans to wean you on to your new ads-meet-private conversations diet slowly.
According to Mashable, Facebook’s head of product for Messenger, Stan Chudnovsky says the roll out will “start slow.” At a conference this week, he said, “When the average user can be sure to see them we truly don’t know, because we’re just going to be very data-driven and user feedback-driven on making that decision.”
The ads will be rolling out before the end of this year, and reportedly, users will have the option to temporarily hide specific ads, but not hide them forever. How generous. Thank you, Facebook overlords!
