How This Pop-Music Powerhouse Keeps Her Brain In Peak Creative Mode
You may not be familiar with Emily Warren's name (yet), but you've definitely heard her music. Below, the hit-factory songwriter dishes on what keeps her going in this week's "Shortlisted."
By any measure, Emily Warren has already had a remarkable career. She's a much sought-after vocalist and a Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songwriter. If you've heard the songs "Capsize" by Frenship or "Paris" by the Chainsmokers, then you've heard her unbelievable voice. And if you've heard "Strings" by Shawn Mendes or "Masterpiece," by Jesse J, you've been a witness to her brilliant songwriting.
But these impressive milestones mark merely the start of Warren's career as a solo performer and artist in her own right. Her first single, "Hurt By You," was released this May, and reached a million streams within a two-week period. She also just released her second single, "Poking Holes," which is a jam if we ever heard one. She was also recently named a 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 for music. NBD.
So where does this pop music powerhouse find the inspo to keep trotting out hits not only for some of the industry's biggest players, but herself as well? Peep all her secrets below.
"I’m a firm believer in making the most of what you know you have, while you have it. If you’re unhappy and you have the ability to get yourself out, do it."
"Fresh Soy Face Cleanser. I love this face wash. I don’t go anywhere without it. It’s super light and leaves your face smelling and feeling amazing.
And GlamGlow ThirstyMud Hydrating Treatment. Every single time I get on a plane, I put this on and genuinely, my skin is better when I get off than it was when I sat down. Every damn time.
Also, Milk Makeup Cooling Water. It's life-changing, and that’s all I’m gonna say about that."
"I love TED Radio Hour because almost every single one is completely mind blowing. I’ve learned so much from this podcast, and listening to people speak about the subjects they study is incredibly interesting.
I took a road trip with my boyfriend this summer, where we had seven or eight-hour drives every few days, and this podcast kept us entertained the whole way."
"Honestly, ninety-nine percent of what I wear is from thrift and vintage stores. Everything is so well made, as it’s been around for a while—sometime upwards of three decades. It’s all reasonably priced if you're willing to dig, and you’ll be the only person who owns it—that’s the best part.
"I just finished the Neapolitan series by Elena Ferrante and I don’t know if I’ve ever read a better book than this collection of four. They’re absolutely incredible. I’m so upset it’s over. Everything I’ve tried to read since pales in comparison."
"See what I mean?!"
"Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist. Aussie is low-key the best line of hair products in the game. Every time I use any of their products, I get constant compliments on the way my hair smells. The 3 Minute Miracle is great because it makes your hair so shiny and smooth, and smelling delish!"
"Nike Air Force 1s! You gotta be comfortable, and that’s pretty much all that matters."
"Staying hydrated is important because 'water is life,' and once you start drinking tons of water, you’ll notice your skin glowing and your mood is better. It’s wild how much of a difference it makes."
