What is the mission of the Girlboss Foundation?

The Girlboss Foundation’s mission is to empower the next generation of female entrepreneurs within the creative community. The Girlboss Foundation fulfills its mission through distinctive grants programs, providing women in the worlds of design, fashion, music and the arts with financial endowments to achieve their goals.

Who can apply?

Girlboss Foundation grants are exclusive to female creatives in the worlds of design, fashion, music, and the arts. To be eligible, GIRLBOSS applicants must be female, US residents, that are or will be 18 years or older by the close of the submission window.

We are a small business or organization seeking financial assistance. Are we eligible for a grant?

The Girlboss Foundation only awards grants to individuals; unfortunately we can not fund companies or organizations. We can award the grant to an individual representing a business, but we do not give the grant to a business as an entity.

How old do I have to be to apply?

Under 18? Bummer… To apply for a Girlboss Foundation grant, applicants must be 18 years or older by the closing date of the submission window.

My funding request does not fall under the creative fields listed in the Girlboss mission statement. Can I still apply?

We do not make grants outside our funding priorities.

Can I apply if I live outside the United States?

Sorry, but international applications are not currently being accepted.

What if I miss the submission date?

Oh no! We can’t include you in this round of grant applications, as it wouldn’t be fair to everyone else. Fear not… any applications submitted after the close of the application window will automatically be rolled into the next round.

What information is required to apply?

Not too much… we just want to know who you are, how to reach you, and about your project. Please be prepared to submit a description of your project, the amount of funding you are requesting and a description of your end goal.

Do I have to submit a project?

Yes! We want to see your work. Feel free to have fun with it and send us a cool video, highlights of your portfolio, a buttoned-up business plan, a link to your site... We’re open to everything and we can’t wait to see what you’ve got!

What restrictions are there for project submitted to the GIRLBOSS Foundation?

Not too many… the Girlboss Foundation is awarding financial grants to women in the worlds of design, fashion, music, and the arts, to help fund them on their way to becoming a GIRLBOSS. Your project should.

Do grant recipients need to complete their projects within a certain period of time?

Projects should be achievable within 12-months of awarding, so please give us an idea of your plan. Tell us what you expect to achieve if selected to receive a Girlboss Foundation Grant.

Can I mail in an application?

Yes! In cases where you would like to submit a physical project, we are happy to accept them by mail. To apply by mail, you will still need to complete the online application form by the submission date. Your mailed-in materials must also be postmarked by the last day of the submission period. Once complete, please send your materials clearly marked with your full name and project title to:

Girlboss Foundation
2046 Hillhurst Ave, #112
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Shortly after submitting your online application, you will receive a confirmation email, and the selection committee will review your application to make sure that you are eligible to apply for the GIRLBOSS™ Foundation grant. Each application is thoroughly reviewed by the selection committee team led by Sophia Amoruso.

A selection committee reviews all applications submitted within the application period and judges each project based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates creativity and innovation in the specific field (30%)
  • Demonstrates business acumen and forward planning (30%)
  • Demonstrates financial need (30%)
  • Proposed timing, work plan, and budget are clear, detailed and achievable within the next 12 months (10%)

What demonstrates financial need?

We aren’t looking to comb through your last tax return! Just tell us in a well articulated statement why you require the funds and how you propose to deploy them.

When are the winners announced?

Each quarter, the selection committee works quickly to review the applications and make a decision within three weeks of the end of the submission window. However, delays can occur during quarters where an excessive number of applications are received.

How will I find out if I’ve won?

GIRLBOSS™ Foundation grant recipients will be contacted by email. The winner will then be publicly announced through our social media channels and the GIRLBOSS News section of our website. We will not accept calls or emails about the Foundation. For official rules, please reference the Application Terms and Conditions.

How much money is awarded?

Each grant beneficiary will receive project funding of $15,000 to be used towards their project within a 12 month period.

How many grants are awarded each year?

Currently, the GIRLBOSS™ Foundation awards two grants per year to female entrepreneurs pursuing creative endeavors.

Who’s on the judging committee?

Our quarterly selection committee is formed from a group of Nasty Gal staff representing varying departments such as design, finance, marketing, and tech and led by Sophia Amoruso.

I wasn’t selected last quarter… Can I apply again?

Absolutely, applicants are welcome to apply once per quarter. Any applicants who submit multiple applications in the quarter may be disqualified.

I previously won a Girlboss Foundation grant. Can I apply again?

Unfortunately not - we must make way for future Girlbosses.

Does the Girlboss Foundation accept volunteers?

We’d be happy to consider you! Please send us your resume at and tell us a bit about yourself!
