About Last Night: The Girlboss Premiere Hits Hollywood

The big day is almost here, ladies. At midnight on Friday, April 21, 13 episodes of the Netflix series Girlboss—adapted from founder Sophia’s New York Times best-selling book of the same name—will be launched into the digital ether in a suede rocket ship (that’s how streaming technology works, I’m told). But last night at the ArcLight Hollywood, the cast and crew and a bunch of lucky jerks got to attend the premiere.

After working the red pink carpet (peep the photos below), everyone made their way inside to catch the first two episodes. The audience came together for a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” to celebrate both Sophia and the show’s star, Britt Robertson, who just so happen to have birthdays this week. And before the lights went down, showrunner and creator Kay Cannon (who you might recognize as the whiz behind all the Pitch Perfect movies) took the stage to reflect:

“In every cast of every show I’ve ever worked on, there’s always one asshole. And the whole season I was looking out for it—I was like, ‘Who’s the asshole?!’ And there wasn’t one. Which means I was the asshole,” Cannon said, laughing.

But after that, things got a lil’ emotional: “I was so fortunate to be picked to tell the story of Sophia Amoruso, and I want to thank you, Sophia, for being the Girlboss that you are. For being so honest with your highs and lows, your flaws—everything. Honesty is a tough commodity these days, and telling your story has given people—particularly young women—the permission to dare to suck in life,” Cannon said, the crowd laughing along with her. “Your example has inspired those of us paralyzed with fear of failing. And I’m getting emotional, because I think it’s such a beautiful story. This was a dream come true for me.”

I’m not at liberty to spoil anything for you all about those first couple eps (though check back here next week for episode recaps!), so I’ll just leave it at this: That love for and commitment to Sophia’s story beams through the screen in this funny, beautifully shot show, chock full of terrific performances. Below, check out everyone’s amazing dresses and shots from the premiere and after party. In the meantime, you can (re)watch the trailer here. Happy binge watching this weekend!
