The Week in Girlboss News: Nasty Women + Female Gaze in Porn + Naps in Space

On this day: In 1973, Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” kicked off a three-week run at #1 on the Billboard charts, spurring dudes to think this song was about them for years to come.

  • Make way for the female gaze, pornbros: Adult film director Erica Lust is advocating for more women in porn to be in front of the camera, behind the camera, and putting projects together in order to combat an industry that keeps “creating the same boring stuff and [is] managed by the same kind of narrow-minded men.” In 2017, she’s funding 10 adult short films by women.

  • In addition to the Women’s March on Washington on January 21, taking place the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, protests will be taking place in cities across the country. Leading the charge for Tinsel Town by way of Park City at Sundance this year is Chelsea Handler at the head of Women’s March on Main; she’ll be joined by Jennifer Aniston, Geena Davis, Salma Hayek, Melissa Leo, Elizabeth Olsen and Rooney Mara, among others.

  • And speaking of Nasty Women: Nearly 700 female artists have contributed artwork to “The Nasty Women Art Show,” which will show at the Queens’ Knockdown Center starting January 12. The artists interpreted the attempted slur used by Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton in the third presidential debate. All pieces will be priced under $100 and benefit Planned Parenthood.

  • Bridget Brennan, CEO of training and consulting firm Female Factor, breaks down how to communicate effectively with female consumers. In short: Engage their intellect! Highlight your company’s ethical responsibility! Don’t play to stereotypes!

  • Last November, U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson became the oldest woman to go into space at age 56. Today, she’ll make history by being the oldest woman to ever perform a spacewalk; her mission will be to replace power gear for the International Space Station. Part of the reason Peggy loves being in space is that she “sleeps like a baby” out there. Get after it, Peggy, and then take a nap. You deserve it.
