Beyond the #Girlbossmoment: Katie Perry Lands Her Dream Job
“For the past eleven months, I was driving four hours total each day to Baltimore, Maryland. Though the commute was beyond exhausting, the position provided me with fantastic experience and opportunities, and I stuck with it in hopes that I would someday land my dream job as a pediatric dietitian at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.
I did a lot of volunteer work at this hospital during my junior and senior year of college—mostly eating lunch with cancer patients and creating different fun objects out of food with them, the purpose of which was to make mealtime more fun and to encourage them to eat. This was developed by a dietitian at the hospital who later became my mentor, and I could never tell who enjoyed the food play time more—me or the patients!
When I applied for an actual job at Nemours about a year and a half ago, I didn’t have enough experience at the time, which is why I set out to make sure my resume and professional portfolio were loaded with excellent experiences. When I came back, the hiring manager remembered me from the previous interview and started by thanking me for returning to apply. After two more interviews, they offered me my dream job!
Aside from doing what I love, this job means way more free time in my day (thanks to a much shorter commute) so I can work towards my additional goals of getting an MBA and starting a nutrition blog or program for kids.”
